About Genesis
A Champion for Newburgh
Genesis is a lifelong resident of the City of Newburgh and the proud daughter of Honduran immigrants. As the first woman of color elected to the Orange County Legislature, Genesis has been a strong, consistent, and essential voice. Genesis began her career in public service at the age of 19 in the nonprofit sector in Newburgh. Over the years, she has joined various municipal and nonprofit boards and ultimately ran for Orange County Legislator, winning her election in 2021. Throughout her career, she has been dedicated to improving communities, fighting for justice, and serving as an advocate.
As the Founding Executive Director of the Desmond Community Center for Community Engagement & Wellness at Mount Saint Mary College, Genesis has provided the community with free health and wellness services. She has received multiple awards, including recognition in the "40 Under 40" program and being honored as a Young Leader by the Orange County Democratic Committee. A homeowner in Newburgh, she loves supporting local businesses and has built strong coalitions both within and outside county government to ensure she represents everyone effectively.
A Proven Leader
Despite being part of the minority caucus, she has not allowed that to hinder her progress. She has been appointed Chair of the Human Services Committee and has strongly advocated for government accountability, speaking truth to power and standing up against corruption. She has led efforts to address the housing crisis through a dedicated task force, balanced the county budget while keeping taxes low, and championed improvements to public transportation. Additionally, Genesis has supported funding for county parks, secured money for parks and recreation in Newburgh, and promoted higher education initiatives at SUNY Orange. She has backed programs that enhance career training and workforce development. As an advocate for county union workers, she helped mobilize public support for the 2024 CSEA contract, which led to the successful ratification of a fair contract. She also supports public safety funding and initiatives, recognizing the importance of safe communities.Genesis has worked collaboratively across party lines in the spirit of community while remaining steadfast in her values and dedication to those she represents. Genesis is committed to continuing the work she has started for our community.
